Crococun Zoo

One of our favorite places to travel to as a family is Riviera Maya, Mexico.  It’s is an easy 2 hour flight from central Florida and provides a host of activities for all of us to enjoy.   Aside from the gorgeous beaches you can find Mayan ruins, cenotes (underground swimming holes), shopping, and more…  On our last visit to the region we decided to stop at the Crococun Zoo, an interactive animal experience we had heard a lot about.

The Crococun Zoo is located just south of the Cancun hotel zone, outside Puerto Morelos.  We easily caught a cab from our hotel in Cancun and arrived at the Zoo within 20 minutes.  The zoo is also on a main public bus route which is safe, convenient and budget friendly.

Our tour guide met us near the entrance shortly after our arrival. We visited on New Years Day and our group was very small.

We loved the verdant surroundings including monkeys in the trees! We didn’t get any close up viewings but we were told they often come down to visit with zoo goers…

This zoo is quite different from the others you have probably visited.  It is a small zoo which offers guided tours in small groups, which last about an hour or so.  The entrance fee ($32 for adults and $22 for kids ages 6 and up) covers the tour and interactions; there are bags of food to feed the animals available for purchase.  The guides are very engaging and multilingual, fluidly communicating with tourists from different countries.

I was so proud of my kids at how open they were to interacting with the animals!

The animal interactions were quite thrilling and informative!

Hand feeding the deer was such a cool activity..

The tour features animals that are native to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and offers hands on interaction with the guidance and assistance of the expert guides.

The hairless Mexican dogs were not the loveliest creatures but they were sweet and ate directly from our hands too!

Even the animal enclosures offered close up views of incredible animals

I will admit that I was a bit skeptical about the price of admission but the reviews on Tripadvisor sold me and I am so happy we decided to visit.  Our time at Crococun Zoo was one of the highlights of our recent trip to Mexico and I totally recommend it for anyone traveling to the region!
Have any of you been to a hands on or interactive zoo?

Wow! So nice that you have somewhere like this just a quick plane ride away!! It would be a whole day of flights for us! My parents went to Rivera Maya last year and only had good things to say about it, so it’s on our travel list when our girls get a little older!

In order for me to touch an animal, it depends on what it is. I’m still leery of swimming with sting rays but I’ve had fun interactions with birds and reptiles!
